In 1872 the Communist Manifesto experienced a heightened popularity as the book was able to be published for the first time. In 1871, Karl Marx and other socialist leaders were put on trial in Germany and because a portion of the Manifesto was read in their trial, they were now allowed to published the material. Immediately the publication was published in German and to follow 5 more languages by 1873. It was published in the United States in 1872, introducing communist ideology to a newly industrializing American population. Engels and Marx would find their ideas spreading through the western world as industrialization created wealth gaps and a rising power struggle between owners and workers.
