At the end of World War I, President Wilson offended members of the United States Senate by travelling to Europe and opposing the League of Nations as well as opposing the views of Henry Cabot Lodge, thereby excluding them from the peace process. President Wilson was the President of the United States during the first world war. He tried to keep the USA out of the war but ultimately had to join the Allies against Germany in 1917. He also help broker a peace treaty with the USA joining the League of Nations. The US Congress vetoed this idea.

It was the time when the members who belonged to the Senate Foreign Committee got to know that former President of United States, Woodrow Wilson Died, This Committee asked chairman of Senate who was Henry Cabot Lodge to lead and represent Senate at the funeral of the President. When Widow of President Woodrow Wilson got to know about this plan of Senate, She sent a note to the committee in which she said that she thought that their presence will be embarrassing to them and it would not be welcoming for her and further in this note, she requested Senators not to attend the funeral. There was long going political rivalry between Wilson and lodge and in most of the time Wilson chose to Ignore Lodge but he also offended Senate as he refused to include senators in the negotiating team which accompanied the President in Paris Peace Conference and not only this, Wilson also made results of this conference public without discussing or consulting Committee members of Senate. It was the first time than in the history when the Senate rejected a peace treaty.
