One specific reason for the formation of the Columbian exchange was to introduce new types of crops to the old world that could help with hunger issues because the crops were grown easily and were nutritious. Things like corn and potatoes completely overtook all other crops and many believe that the population growth was due to this phenomenon.

An environmental effect of the exchange can be the crops diseases that were transferred from the Americas into the new world. Because of crops diseases, the food started dying out and resulted in famines. The most famous case of this was the Irish potato famine when huge numbers of people died due to starvation since all the crops had died.

A specific demographic event can be the innumerable deaths of the local native population of the Americas. Because of the diseases that were brought from Europe and Africa and which the Natives were not accustomed to, huge numbers of Native Americans died and started resettling other areas and moving. This also led to a huge influx of Africans since the slave owners in the new world could no longer exploit the locals.
