Machiavelli is one of the founding fathers of realism: A major view in philosophy and political theory that contrasts to idealism.

As a realist, he argues in his introduction to his major work (the Prince) that humans are not very different from animals. Dominated mainly by negative or pesimistic features, people tend to be self centered, seeking worldly desires. Therefore people work for his their personal benefits and don’t think of the society. He also sees man as wicked and so their always act in their favor becoming corrupt when in power.

The advice he gives in the Prince assumes man is inhernehtly selfish and corrupt and thus a harsh logic he developed to act upon this notions on political considerations.
