The suspicion of the black soldier was as absurd as it was obvious and widespread among the soldiery and the officers of the American army. The few combat battalions, not to highlight the black troops in the auxiliary corps, were sent, as an example of that suspicion, exclusively by white officers. In the Navy the presence in destinations of cabin boys and auxiliary sailors (cleaning, kitchens, waiters) of the blacks was numerous.
