General Sherman's march on sea lasted from 15th November till 21st December 1864. He led 60,000 soldiers on march from Atlanta to Savannah in Georgia. It s purpose was to frighten the Georgian people to stop supporting the confederate cause. The soldiers didn't destroy towns but stole food and livestock while burning houses and barns of those who resisted.  He managed to capture Atlanta and it was a major victory as Atlanta was a railroad junction and industrial center.
