These were originally created for religious purposes, just like the Puritan-era colonies of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay. Some examples of these utopian communities were the Rappites and the Shakers. These followed many values that were common in Puritan communities, such as simplicity, celibacy, and common labour and reward.

Eventually, the communities came to reflect social improvement rather than religious purity. New communities emphasized the absence of religious dogma, political equality, cooperation, intellectual and moral education and social harmony.
