John Marshall (1755-1835) was the fourth Chief Justice of the USA’s Supreme Court. He became the Chief Justice in 1801. His responsibility was to establish the Supreme Court’s role in the federal government.  

Marshall was influenced by General George Washington so that he decided to join the military at the age of 20 years old. Marshall became an officer, following the militia’s victory, with the Continental Army’s 3rd Regiment of Virginia. At that time, Marshall served under Colonel Morgan. He also got the chance to fight in the Battle of Brandywine. He showed his fortitude and bravery during the war.

Marshall’s career in government in 1782 by joining the Virginia House of Delegates. He returned to the position in 1787 and 1795. In 1799 he was elected to be one of the representatives in the U.S House of Representatives. Yet it didn’t take a long time. It was because Marshall in 1800, was appointed to be the secretary of state under President John Adams. In 1801, as we all have known before, he became the Chief Justice.
