Before the Agriculture Revolution took place in Great Britain, most people lived in rural areas.

This is because, most families worked on farms to grow their own food. Since there was no 'mass market' to buy food from, (apart from traditional farmers markets) people relied of self sustenance.

For over a century, between 1700 and 1800, there was a significant rise in the production of crops per acre. In fact, the rise in agriculture product outstripped the rise in the general population of the country.

This led to surplus production and a growing number of people who started working in urban areas.
