It is made up of many islands and a peninsula, this affected the development of city-states, because mountains, bodies of water, etc. cut many of the cities off from each other. This meant that they were independent, and were constantly at war with each other (really, they didn't exactly have a lot of similarities) and only helped each other when outside invaders try to attack them, (as in the case of Persians)
