"The spoils" is a phrase that refers to what the victor gets when he or she wins or succeeds above and beyond everyone else. The proverb can be expressed in a variety of ways: the victor receives the spoils; the victor receives the spoils, and so on. American Senator William L. Marcy came up with the phrase "to the winner go the spoils" in 1832, when he was a senator from New York. Marcy was defending the spoils system, which rewards elected officials with appointments and jobs for their friends and supporters.
