MARITOLE
"This cabin is minel" The words spit from my mouth. My
body was stiff as a beam. The soldier grabbed me andd
threw me outside the door. I heard the soldier yell at the
people in the cabin. There was a struggle, and he came
out with the cooking pot and blankets he ripped from the
bed. "The musket," I told him. "My forks and ladles. The
quilts my grandmother made. Our corn!"
He yelled at me, but I didn't understand his words. He
shot into the air, and another soldier came riding up the
wagon ruts.
He picked me up and tried to get me on his horse, but I
kicked and nearly pulled us both to the ground. It was the
same soldier who had tapped my shoulder to let me
