How does the system for federal public defenders differ from the state system? The salaries of federal defenders cannot be as high as those attorneys who work in the US Attorney’s office.

There is no difference between federal and state public defenders.

The federal defenders are not appointed and do not have their eligibility evaluated by the court.

The chief federal defenders are appointed by the court system for a period of four years and work under the judicial branch of the government.
