The Missouri compromise was an exertion by Congress to defuse the sectional and political competitions activated by the demand of Missouri later in 1819 for affirmation as a state in which subjection would be allowed. At the time ,the United States contained twenty-two states uniformly partitioned among slaves and free.

Others felt that it made the north appear to be more forceful in its abolitionist servitude perspective and added to southern hatred, which may have prompted the Civil War happening sooner. The Missouri compromise was intended to make harmony amongst slaves and non-slave states.
