Ang Lungsod ng Marikina ay isang 1st class at highly urbanized na lungsod na
kabilang sa Metropolitan Manila. Ayon sa 2015 census ito ay mayroong kabuuang
450,741 o halos kalahating milyon na laki ng populasyon. Ang eksaktong lokasyon
ng Marikina ay nakalatag sa 14°39´N 121°06´E. Matatagpuan sa Eastern border ng
Metro Manila, pangunahin itong daanan patungo sa probinsya ng Rizal at Quezon.
Ang mga hangganan ng Marikina ay ang Quezon City sa Kanluran, Pasig at Cainta sa
Timog, Bayan ng San Mateo sa Hilaga, at Antipolo City sa Silangan. Matatanaw sa
Silangan nito ang magandang kabundukan ng Sierra Madre at dumadaloy sa
gitnang-kanlurang bahagi ng lungsod ang makasaysayang Marikina River. Ang
kabuuang lawak nito ay halos 21.5 kilometro kwadrado (km²) o 2,150 ektarya (ha).
Tropikal Monsoon ang klima sa lungsod at bagamat hindi rin nakakaligtas sa
natural na kalamidad gaya ng pagbaha dulot ng pag-apaw ng ilog ng Marikina
tuwing may malakas na pag-ulan at ang banta ng lindol bunga ng presensya ng West
Valley fault System sa Marikina ay hindi ito hadlang sa patuloy na pag-unlad ng
lungsod mula pa noon. Makulay ang kasaysayan ng Marikina simula nang itinatag
ng mga Jesuits sa matabang lupa/lambak ng Marikina noong 1630. Dating kasama
sa probinsya ng Rizal, humiwalay at naging bahagi ng Metro Manila at naging ganap
na lungsod noong Disyembre 8,1996. Sa kasalukuyan ito ay binubuo ng 16 na
baranggay na nahahati sa dalawang distrito.
Tagalog ang pangunahing lengguwahe sa Marikina at ginagamit din ang
English sa komersyo at edukasyon. Karamihan ng mamamayan ay Roman Catholic
bagamat meron din iba pang Faith o pananampalataya. Patuloy din ang migrasyon
ng iba pang ethnic groups mula sa ibang bahagi ng bansa. Ang Marikina ang
pinakamalaking manufacturer ng kalidad na sapatos sa bansa na ini export din kaya
naman tinagurian itong “Shoe Capital of the Philippines”. Sa ngayon ay nakakalat
ang pinagkukunan ng kita ng lungsod sa patuloy na pagdami ng mga Industrial at
Commercial Centers sa ibat-ibang barangay.
Bukod sa masasarap na lutuin o cuisine at makulay na mga festivities gaya ng
Rehiyon –Rehiyon festival, ay maipagmamalaki din ang taglay na disiplina ng mga
Marikeño, ang katatagan sa harap ng mga pagsubok, gayundin ang mahusay na
pamamalakad ng mga lokal na pinuno ng Marikina na patuloy na nagpapakilala sa
atin bilang World-Class na siyudad sa Pilipinas.
