Tourism and Animals Originally thought as a method of transporting people and goods, the use of dogs to pull sleds is now a sport and business especially practiced in North America and Europe. Although at first glance it may seem like a harmless activity, there can be cases of abuse, neglect, overexploitation or mistreatment. In many cases the animals spend the day, and often even the night, tied on the snow: although sometimes they are provided with a blanket, straw or even a hut (which usually ends up full of snow), these are extreme climatic conditions.
Likewise, their space usually ends up dirty with urine and feces and the hygienic conditions are not adequate. Keeping dogs on a permanent leash or for long periods of time prevents them from performing their natural behaviors, which causes frustration and can lead to abnormal behaviors such as aggressiveness and anxiety. It can also cause hypervigilance, which in turn leads to lack of sleep. Likewise, tied animals are three times more likely to bite than those that are not.
