The original pueblo of Los Angeles was founded in the 1780s where Spanish colonial leaders had identified a site offering year-round access to fresh surface water in order to irrigate crops. Los Angeles is a very different city today, but its downtown center remains at essentially the same historic location, even though a spot near the harbor (San Pedro / Long Beach) or the airport (El Segundo / Westchester) would make much more economic sense in the 21st Century.
