The creation of parliamentary institutions in European nations was a way of limiting the prevailing monarchical absolutism until then, when the kings had absolute power over their territories and their subjects, thus being able to violate without any kind of consideration the elementary rights of the life, liberty, and property of the nobles, clergy, and landowners, as well as the rest of society.
