Why does few people know about Juneteenth.

Below are a few facts about this holiday. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.

Juneteenth is Friday, June 19, a holiday that is arguably as important to our nation as the Fourth of July, since it commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people of Texas, then the most remote region of the Confederacy, finally learned slavery had been abolished and that they were free.

For those that don't know, Juneteenth is the celebration that African Americans created in Texas after finding out that slavery was over… ... The story is that this day, June 19, 1865, was shortened to “Juneteenth”, and then subsequently celebrated by the state of Texas, where it occurred, and now 45 states.

In 1945, Juneteenth was introduced in San Francisco by an immigrant from Texas, Wesley Johnson. During the 1950s and 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement focused the attention of African Americans on expanding freedom and integrating.
