Why did the united states and the soviet s end up on opposite sides of the cold war?

The Soviet Union strive for world dominance similar to its control of the previously independent countries of Eastern Europe. The United States opposed the spread of communism. By establishing NATO the United States and the Soviet Union were on opposite sides of the cold war.
