It cost a great deal, and those who think the answer should be no, should consider the loss of both Kennedys and Martin Luther King. Those were not trivial losses.  But it made the 14th Amendment truly what it was meant to be -- recognition of those, but for the color of their skin, would be American Citizens.

Wasn't that what civil rights was about -- Equality not only before the law, but before society?
