A comment from a historian about the merger between Singapore and
Malaya
Malaya's security was safeguarded as long as Singapore remained a British colony
The British presence made the possibility of the communists taking control of
Singapore slim. If Singapore became independent of British rule, then Malaya's
security would be threatened. Unless Singapore merged with a larger anti-communist
Malaya, Singapore could become a base from which the communists could attack
Malaya
Source D: A historian's comment on the situation in Singapore and Malaya before
the merger
Tunku Abdul Rahman feared that Singapore might achieve independence in 1963 as
a communist state and be a danger to Malaya's security. Despite the difficulties of
establishing a successful merger, the Malayan Prime Minister came to the reluctant
conclusion that a hostile, independent and communist-controlled Singapore was more
frightening. In May 1961, Tunku Abdul Rahman suggested that Malaya, Singapore
and the Borneo territories should work for closer economic co-operation. This was
welcomed by the Singapore government except for the communist members of the
