Why did president Kennedy invoke the Monroe doctrine

Monroe Doctrine was declared against the backdrop of Congress of Vienna, which was followed by French Revolution and Napoleonic wars. It was one of the longstanding feature of American Foreign Policy of earlier years that was followed till World War-I by successive American Governments. This Doctrine was propounded by then American President James Monroe on December,2. 1823, which declared that “the American continents are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers”. Interestingly, no other nation had become a party to this declaration or accepted this doctrine. Americans had announced this doctrine unilaterally so as to warn off the nations specially European nations, against taking any sinister interest in America in particular and American hemisphere in general.
