What benefits did european explorers hope to gain through their discoveries in the americas?

With the discoveries in America, the European explorers have hopes of having to benefit from it and having to gain more things aside of having to explore the place. They hope to seek wealth and also, to have a land of their own. These are the things they hope to discover that will be of beneficial to them.
