Before WWI, there was a strong build up in tensions among the various European nations. This is exemplified in the acronym MAIN (militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism). The militarism aspect essentially lead to an arms race among nations. This build up was in an essence, who could create the most advanced and deadly weaponry of the time at the fastest. Examples of new technological innovations of war include new rifles, tanks, gasses, and large antiaircraft units.
