When Romans came to possess Palestine, including Jerusalem and other Jewish cities, they were taken aback because they did not find a gang of barbarians, but rather, a pretty organized, well-educated, and skilled nation, with their own systems, that were much more ancient and in some ways more refined, than those in Rome. Romans, allowed the Jews almost anything, but they did not tolerate the fact that the Jews were not the barbarians they had made them out to be.
