What were the underlying and precipitating causes of the hundred years war?

England had passed into the hands of William of Normandy after the Norman Conquest of 1066. For several years after this event, the Kings of England were also in control of Normandy and many other provinces in France. In the process of unification and centralisation it was only natural that the Kings of France wanted to throw out the English from their land. Similarly the English Kings wanted to expand their hold on France and at times even placed claims to the French throne. Thus the Hundred years War that broke out was caused by the rivalry between the English Kings and the French Kings, the underlying issue being whether France was to be ruled by rulers of French origin or of English origin. Ultimately the French came out successful as national pride and emerging French patriotism and nationalism were in their favour.
