A monopoly is a corporation or business that controls almost the entire share of a particular market. During the late 19th century, individuals like John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carneige were considered monopolies. These individuals controlled almost the entire market for certain goods (Rockefeller with kerosene/oil and Careneige with steel).

When a corporation or business has almost complete control of a share of a market it usually has a negative effect on consumers. This is due to the fact that competition between businesses is what helps to keep costs low for the consumer. Since there was no real competition in these industries, there was no need to keep the prices low for these goods.
