The Hohokam people irrigated the desert to develop farmland. They were the only people at the time to use irrigation systems to water their plants and archaeologists have uncovered many sophisticated irrigation systems. The Hohokam were an indigenous group of peoples who lived in the Southwestern part of what is now the United States. They grew corn, were agriculturists and lived in sedentary village near the Tucson Basin. Tucson is now a city in modern-day Arizona. Because of the desert climate of this state, the Hohokam's settled near water and arable lands.
