The U.S. was brought into the Vietnam war because America wanted to help control the spread of communism. During the war, Vietnam was broken into two countries: Northern and Southern Vietnam. Northern Vietnam was a communist country, whereas South Vietnam was not. This fueled the "domino theory," which meant that if Vietnam fell to communism, many of its closest neighbors would follow.
