Interest groups are a type of formal organization of people, whose primary purpose is to advance a particular cause, policy or belief that benefits them directly or one segment of society or several.

They attempt to do so by taking several actions that include to lobby government (including members of Congress, the executive branch, etc.), engage in election activities, educate people about their interests, activities, relevance, current issues, etc., and to mobilize people who act on behalf of the organization in order to perform activities, such as writing letters, making phone calls and demonstrating, among others.
