What is true about the impeachment purpose and process

Impeachment is a charge of misconduct filed against the president. Majority of the members of the House must vote for these charges in order to impeach the president. 
For example, president Nixon resigned from the office to avoid being impeached. He had to due to the Watergate scandal in 1974.
