The negative effects that East Germany experienced after reunification were growth in unemployment and slow economic growth.

After the reunification of Germany, the most direct consequences were suffered by the inhabitants of the East. Some could not adapt to the standard of living of the West because of the difference in wages and prices between the two states. Unemployment grew to figures close to one million people. Thanks to the investments and economic aid of the federal government, the European Union and the United States, the situation seemed to have been controlled but later Germany found itself in a deep crisis derived from the errors of reunification, being more an absorption on the part of the West to the East.
