I think the conclusion on this is a display of power and a strategy to have land expansions and dominance over the world.  Powerful countries try to gain through land expansion. It would ensure their supply of raw materials from controlled countries.  An island like Hawaii would like to be a part of the US, it must have seen the security and advantage that it can receive if it submits itself.
