Martin Luther believed in sola scriptura, the belief that only faith alone is required to be saved. This contrasted with Catholicism, which believed faith AND good works would lead to salvation. In 1517, he published his 95 Theses that condemned the corruption of the Catholic Church, One example being the selling of indulgences.
