What was the role of darwinism in america?

During the era of Imperialism, many European/western were using Darwinism as an excuse to take over other places. the idea of Darwin ism was that other countries which were lower than the American status needed Us's help. it was "the white man's burden" to help out these countries. they took over minor places with an excuse of civilizing them.
