The civil rights movement used many different techniques in order to challenge segregation. All of their techniques tended to be pacific, following the teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. of peaceful civil disobedience. One of the techniques they used was protest marches. Some examples of this were the Selma to Montgomery marches and the Birmingham Campaign. The movement also used boycotts in order to put pressure on society and lawmakers to change the laws. Finally, the movement often refused to follow segregation laws. By doing so, they expressed the belief that laws that are unjust do not have to be followed.
