Why does the term "gilded age" accurately describe the period of the late 1800s?

It was called the gilded age because it was similar to gilded items. It only looked great but it was actually plagued by serious issues, mostly relating to social problems. There were monopolies everywhere, poverty and unemployment, the wealthy had all the money while the common people had nothing, etc.
