Native American societies developed different cultural traditions in different regions:
- The Plateau Culture: Its people lived in small villages and survived by fishing and hunting.
- The Northwest Coast: With a mold climate and a abundance of natural resources. The Indians in this area were secure enough to build the permanent villages with a rigid social structure.
- California: hospitable area with about 100 tribes that spoke more than 20 languages before European contact. They lived in small bands of hunter-gathers.
- The Great Basin: It was barren wasteland of deserts. Natives were always on the move and lived in compact easy-to-build wikiups.
- The Southwest: Many natives lived in permanent settlements, known as pueblos. Other were more nomadic ( Navajo, Apache ).
- The Plains : The vast prairie region from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. They were relatively settled farmers and hunters.
- The Southeast: Humid, fertile region. Natives were mostly farmers.
- The Northwest: from Canada`s Atlantic coast to North Carolina and to the Mississippi river valley. Indians that first had contact with Europeans ( Iroquian and Algonquian language groups )They lived in small farming and fishing villages.  
- The Subarctic: Area composed of taiga and tundra. They lived in small family groups.
-  The Arctic : cold, flat region in present-day Alaska, Canada and Greenland. Some of tribes were nomads, following seals and polar bears. They lived in dome-shaped houses made of sod and timber ( or in the North, ice blocks ).
