The Demographic Transition Model (DTM) is a system that was set in place when, after 1700, nations began to realize the drop in death rates, and an increase in birth rates, in nations, depending on their geographic location and their overall economical and development situation. Looking into the fact, it was seen that countries that started improving their levels of sanitation, healthcare, and other factors, presented a decrease of death rates and a healthy level of birth rates. Thus, these changes, especially in death rates, led researchers to build up a model that categorized countries into 5 demographic categories, that depend entirely on the birth and death rates, which in turn show the successful developmental policies and actions of a nation. However, the model does have shortfalls that are recognized, and one of them specifically is that the model never considered the effect of migration from and into a country before. This means that migration from any of the levels, does not affect the categories in any way, because migration is not calculated into the model. Aside from that, it is now recognized that there are no countries either in Stage 1, nor in Stage 5. Most are within stages 3 and 4, with a few in level 2.
