The rise of totalitarian governments began after World War I and the Depression which created economic difficulties that led people to lose believes in their democratic government. Totalitarian governments seemed to give a sense of security and tried to take the country in a strong direction.

Nazism, Fascism, and  Communism used features of totalitarianism to rule their country. In Italy and Germany, totalitarianism gives rise to dictatorship by allowing only one political party. Communism on the other hand focused on the spread of their beliefs worldwide.
