Document A The edited excerpt below is from William Penn’s Charter of Privileges granted to the inhabitants( people living there already) of Pennsylvania in 1701.

Document B
This is an excerpt from Olaudah Equiano’s The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African (New York, 1791, vol. 1.) Equiano was an African who was sold into slavery in America in the mid-1700s.
I loved my family, I love my village, and I especially loved my mother because I was the youngest son and I was her favorite...I was very happy. But my happiness ended suddenly when I was eleven [and sold into slavery. After being marched to the seacoast] the first object which saluted my eyeswas a slave ship I was soon put down under the decks.

“Because no People can be truly happy…if their Freedom of Thought is taken away…I do hereby grant and declare, That no Person inhabiting [living] in this Province…shall be discriminated against…nor will that person be forced to…maintain any religious Worship…that is against their own thoughts or against their religious beliefs.”

Compare Document A and Document B. How is Equiano’s
perspective of America different from Penn’s perspective of America? Why are the perspectives different in these two documents? Use textual evidence from both documents to support your ideas and the knowledge you have gained in class.
