The great compromise created a bicameral legislature, meaning two houses. One being the Senate, and the other the House of Reps.

In the Senate, every state gets two senators. In the House, representation is based on state population.

This was a compromised reached after big states lobbied for the Virginia Plan, and small states lobbied for the New Jersey Plan. The compromise allowed both large and small states to come to a middle ground.
