He learned from the Chinese' mistake of clinging to their traditional ways and not modernize and reform their ways. Emperor Meiji believed that modernization was necessary to keep Japan as a great power.The emperor who retook Japanese power from the shogun. His taking back of power is called the Meiji restoration and his rule was called the Meiji era. During his reign, he made many reforms. He emphasized the importance of education, he industrialized by building railroads. He also build telegraph lines, a national currency, and made Japan one of the leading industrial nations.
