The origins of Black History Month date back to 1926, when
Carter G. Woodson proposed a
weeklong celebration of Black
history and heritage. He argued,
"If a race has no history, ... it
stands in danger of being
exterminated."
However, today, some educators
and activists believe that Black
History Month does more harm
than good. They worry it may
encourage teachers to limit
teaching of Black history to one
month a year, rather than
recognizing it as an integral part of
U. S. and world history.
What would you propose schools
do to make sure all students learn
about Black history? Write two
paragraphs describing your idea.
Feel free to include Black History
Month in your proposal or leave it
out.
