Read the following descriptions of map projections and then answer the question that follows. In an Interrupted-area projection, blank areas are inserted in the map to reduce distortion of the continents. These
blank areas, or Interruptions, In the map are usually made in the water surface of the earth. This type of map allows
areas to be studied with little distortion. This projection is also useful for showing characteristics of regions. Such
characteristics could include natural resources, population, and distributions.
The polar projection usually shows the North Pole In the center of the map. The major advantages of this type of
projection are that most of the land in the world is closer to the North Pole than to the South Pole, lands closer to
the North Pole are shown in true size and shape, and the actual alr routes used today (great clrcle routes) are often
close to the Arctic regions. The major disadvantage of this projection is that distortion of distances and shapes Increases in areas farther away from the center.
