federal agency that investigates allegations of civil rights violations plans to send representatives to Hampton next week to gather information on the Allen Iverson case.

The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights decided to look into the matter based on media reports and the receipt of letters and telephone calls complaining about the way Iverson was treated, said Ki-taek Chun, deputy director of the agency's eastern regional office.

The commission plans to check out "the allegations that somehow there has been a gross disparity in the administration of justice," Chun said.

The commission is an independent fact-finding agency that submits reports and recommendations on civil rights problems to the president and Congress. It has no enforcement authority but can subpoena witnesses. Created during the Eisenhower administration, the agency has been instrumental in the passage of such legislation as the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
