Control of the Ohio River Valley At the time of the French and Indian War, many people wanted control over the Ohio River Valley. But the valley was Indian land, and they wanted to hold onto it. The Indians wanted to keep trading their goods with the Europeans. They did not want the French or British to live on their land. By this time, there were British colonists living on the east side of the Allegheny Mountains (These were part of the Appalachian Mountain range). They saw the area west of the mountains as a land of riches. Some colonists wanted to get land grants and then sell the land for a profit. But they needed more farmland to do this with. The Ohio River Valley looked like a perfect place to get it. There were also colonists who were making money with the Indian fur trade. None of them wanted to see the French control the Ohio River Valley.
