How useful are source A and B for finding out about the conditions for children in the factories in the 19th century? Source A:
D: Samuel Smith owned a factory. He wrote this in 1832.

'I give work to many women and children. They are lucky to work in my factory because they do not have to beg in the streets for money. I also allow my workers to have a 1 hour break to rest and eat their food during the working day. I do feed them well. They can have porridge and bacon for breakfast, meat everyday for dinner, and sometimes puddings and pies. All the fruit in the orchard outside the factory was eaten by the children. I feed the adults as well too. I make sure my factory is kept clean too.'

Source B:
C: Joseph Haberjam is a worker in a factory. This is what he wrote to describe what it was like in the factory. The year is 1831.

'I was 7 years old when I started work. I worked from 5 o'clock in the morning to 8 o'clock at night. I was allowed 30 minutes to rest and eat my food. Sometimes if the boss did not think I was working hard enough, or if I fell asleep he beat me with a leather strap. Sometimes the owner of the factory used to visit us.'
