Buffalo soldiers were segregated from other troops and were often treated disrespectfully among their own army. Buffalo soldiers were highly effective in battling Native Americans, and it was Native Americans who labeled them “buffalo soldiers.” These African American soldiers became respected as formidable opponents and worthy warriors among Native Americans and the tribes did not underestimate their fighting skills during battle.
